ETA: Separatist Terrorism in Spain

A Guide to Action

We are at an end, Blog. You have been good to me, but now it’s time to solve this issue. This issue that has been plaguing Spain not for the 40 years of ETA terrorism, but for all the years of Basque supremacism. We are supposed to break the solution down into steps, five or more to be exact. I will attempt to do so, but a solution to this problem isn’t an exact methodical science. It is buried deep in the hearts of men.

1. First and most importantly, the Spanish government must apprehend a majority of the ETA criminals (members). By doing this, it will finally weaken them to a point where they will need to disband and eventually to stop terrorizing Spain and killing its people.

2. Then the remaining members of ETA should be required to present themselves to the Spanish authorities. They should not be arrested if they are deemed harmless, but this must be carried out in order to insure that no further organization, terrorist in nature, should form for this cause.

3. Next an agreement must be met between the central government of Spain and the people, all of the people, of the Basque region. This agreement should be met in mini town meetings or public forums throughout the Basque region with an equal representation from all three sides (the indigenous Vascos, the rest of the regular Basque population, and representatives for the central government of Spain).

4. After a consensus is made in these public forums, steps should quickly be taken to put this into legislation. Under careful evaluation and close scrutiny, a complete agreement must be made in the central government of Spain, which contains the senators, president of government, and the monarchy. This legislation should be carried out immediately and effitiently.

5. A close watch should be kept over the Basque region for a short term necessity. They must make sure that trust can be given to said autonomy to run itself according to the consensus and agreements made. This watch can be lifted only when the Spanish government is absolutely sure they can confide in the leaders of the Baque region. After that there should still be some minor watch over the autonomy, but only as the passed legislative act requires.

6. This final step is not up to anyone other than the Basque people. They should remain pacific in all of their agreements. They should create no more haste and violence in the wonderful united nation of Spain. It is this that will be the deciding factor in making sure that a group like ETA will never form again for this cause. It has been seen that violence can be effective, but for the wrong regions. Although other nations like Catalonia and Andalusia aren’t completely content about their not completely autonomous states, as in a state of being, they still continue on and pass legislation based mostly in discussion, lobbying, and politics. The Basque region can learn a thing or two from these autonomies and erase this horrible stigma that has been such a major part of their reason for so long.

World, I bid the farewell with this last post. It has been an honor and a privilege to discuss with you this issue that has plagued Spain for so long. I only hope for the best and that my blog may influence at least someone to act in a positive way toward others, if not just for their country to eliminate terrorism, but also to treat others well for being another person—this meaning not basing relationships, friendships, and judgments on superficial things like race, language, and ethnic background. May I reiterate: “… [B]e the change you wish to see in the world.” That is all.

Although I have no knowledge about ETA terrorism in Spain, these seem like very effective and systematic ways to deal with the issues.

It was interesting to read about the Basque religion and the ETA on your blog. Your ideas on how to deal with the problem seem quite effective; hopefully the Spanish government will make it a priority to change the current situation.
